Tencent, which has become the largest company in the gaming world, continues its investments. The company has already bought Sumo Digital, a UK-based game development studio, for $1.27 billion, according to the latest information. Moreover, this purchase covers the entire Sumo Group. In other words, the firm’s five main studios – Sumo Sheffield, Sumo Nottingham, Sumo Newcastle, Sumo Leamington Spa and Sumo Warrington – have also been acquired. Tencent buys Sumo Digital for $1.27 billion
Tencent had previously acquired an 8.75% stake in Sumo Digital. It has now made another $1.26 billion acquisition, at 513 pence per share, and has acquired the entire Sumo Group with a total valuation of $1.27 billion.
Although we remember Sumo Digital mostly with Little Big Planet, which it developed on Playstation consoles, the company has actually made many different games in many different areas. Sackboy: A Big Adventure, developed for Playstation 5 and Playstation 4 last year, was the latest in Hood: Outlaws & Legends. Previous games by the company include Team Sonic Racing, Disney Infinity, Xbox Fitness and Crackdown 3. In addition to these games, Sumo Digital also played a supporting role in the production of games such as Forza Horizon 2, Hitman, Hitman 2 and signed different platform versions of some games.
With this significant acquisition, Tencent looks like it will continue its claim to be the largest in the gaming world. As you know, the company has already acquired League of Legends producer Riot Games. In addition, Epic Games, Activision Blizzard, Ubisoft, Bluehole, Paradox Interactive, Supercell, Grinding Gear Games and Yager also have significant shares. The firm had already recently acquired a majority stake in Yager, the developer of Spec Ops: The Line.
