After a civil lawsuit was filed last week by the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing against Activision Blizzard for sexism, more than 2,000 Blizzard employees wrote an open letter to the company’s management, calling Blizzard’s response to the lawsuit “abhorrent and insulting.” Today, there will be a layoff by this group.
The group told Bloomberge that its goal is to improve conditions for all employees at the firm, especially women, those who do not identify with a particular gender, and other marginalized groups.
The layoff will take place at Blizzard’s campus in Irvine, California.
After some employees commented that they might not be able to participate in the leave of work action for financial reasons, Blizzard announced that employees participating in the layoff would be given paid leave. Therefore, the turnout is expected to be quite large.
Activision Blizzard Inc. CEO Bobby Kotick also sent an email to employees apologizing, calling the firm’s latest stance “insensitive, insensitive.” Kotick said they have agreed with the WilmerHale law firm to review the firm’s policies and create a safe environment for ending discrimination and harassment, and will take swift steps, including staff changes, encouraging differences in hiring and removing inappropriate game content.
Two years ago, Riot Games employees took a leave of work and about 150 people participated.
