Canadian accessories company Dbrand launched its black side panels for the PlayStation 5 in February with a price tag of $50, and the panels sold out within hours.
On Saturday, there was an interesting development. Dbrand received a letter from Sony Interactive Entertainment’s lawyers threatening a lawsuit, after which he announced that he had decided to end the sale. The last one they used in the statement was pretty harsh, saying that users have the right to install any spare parts they want on their consoles, and that Sony plans to launch a black PS5 console, so they don’t think it wants a competitor. “While we believe consumers have the right to customize and modify their hardware with the parts they want, the Darkplates you have are now collector’s products,” he said, adding that the black panels are sold out. His last sentences were “f*ck you and especially f*ck Sony”.
It’s only been a few days, but Dbrand has announced a new version of the popular PS5 side panels 2.0, this time in three different colors: black, white and PS1 gray.
Dbrand added an air conditioning grid to these new panels. On the product’s promotion page, they called it “king, matte, lawyers” and said ,let’s see if you can sue this too:)
In fact, they introduce this new design by saying “we would be happy to sell you the license of the design Sony” and they make fun of Sony. I don’t think Sony would back down on this, but as Dbrand said, if Sony didn’t patent proprietary design for side panels at the time, there might not be much it can legally do. Which must explain how Dbrand was able to challenge Sony so easily.
In the meantime, I strongly recommend that you visit Dbrand’s product page, they have made a great design.
