Microsoft’s acquisition of Zenimax (and Bethesda) studios was one of the biggest acquisitions in recent years and one of its moves affecting the gaming world. Then came messages from the Microsoft front that we were not done yet, but we didn’t see any progress on that. In between, there were rumors that Microsoft was after a Japanese studio, but that didn’t become a reality.
Meanwhile, Sony and other big names didn’t stand idly by. Sony Team Asobi, Firesprite, Housemarquee and finally Demon;s Souls Remake developer Bluepoint Studios, for example, made some serious moves by tying it to its colors. The Microsoft front remains silent.
However, Phil Spencer’s statement reiterates that Microsoft is not done with studio acquisitions.
“I’m really proud of some of the creators who chose to be part of xbox. We provide them with financial stability. It’s not just about the success of their next game. I want to give them more creativity, longer periods of time to get their best work done,” Spencer said, adding that “we are always looking to find people who we think will fit us and the teams we think will fit our strategy. We don’t have a quota on that. We don’t have a calendar that requires us to buy a cadaver studio for a certain date. If we find a studio that we think will suit us and what we want to do is common and we think we can be better together, we will buy that studio.”
Xbox Game Studios currently has 23 studios.
