Hidetaka Miyazaki, creator of the Souls series, said her presence in the gaming industry was due to the PS2 game Ico.
One of the interviews published in Famitsu to mark the 20th anniversary of Ico’s publication in Japan belongs to Miyazaki. Miyazaki explained how important Ico was to this important step in his life, saying that “if I hadn’t played Ico at a friend’s house, I wouldn’t have entered the video game industry.”
Created and directed by Fumito Ueda, Ico was released for PS2 20 years ago. Team Ico’s next game has already become another famous name, shadow of the colossus.
“When I graduated from college and started a new job, I stayed away from games for a while, then had the chance to play Ico on advice at a friend’s house. It was a beautiful experience and story I could never have imagined. That’s when I left the company I was working for and started working for FromSoftware. When I say that a game changed my life, I’m not exaggerating, I’m proud to say that this game was Ico and it was a Ueda game,” says Miyazaki.
One day, someone might come out and say, “Dark Souls changed my life,” because Miyazaki, like Ueda, is one of the current living legends of the gaming world.
