The release of the next generation of consoles coincided with an unfortunate period; disruptions in both development processes and supply chains due to the pandemic prevented enough devices to be available for sale to meet demand. It should also be underlined that the problem still persists after so much time.
Despite this negative picture, the next generation of consoles has achieved very good sales figures. On the Xbox front, there have been announcements that a much better sales performance has been achieved than previous generations, and you will remember. According to Ampere Analysis, PS5 sales are much better.
“Sony closed 2021 with 17.1 million PS5 sales; this amounts to approximately 1.6 times Xbox Series sales.”
Daniel Ahmad, a market analyst, estimated that Xbox Series sales would exceed 12 million by the end of 2021, but other analysis suggested that there could be 10.3 million sales, based on the fact that there are consoles released that have not yet been sold. Ampere Analysis estimates that 10.5 million Xbox Series X/S sales are made, including 7.7 million in 2021.
In any case, the PS5 seems to be ahead of the competition between the two console brands for now, but we don’t know what it will bring next term. Microsoft can make the move it’s been waiting for for years and leave Sony behind; we’ll see all in the coming period. But we shouldn’t just wait quietly in a corner and ignore the Nintendo Switch, which reaches 3-4 times the total of both consoles:)
