2021 was a pretty good year for the gaming world. But it seems this is true even for games that are not yet on the market. Kickstarter, which helps fund the community, said the gaming category broke records last year. According to our colleagues at GamesIndustry.biz, the record has been breaking for the last two years in a row.
Let’s note that over 400 games have been successfully funded only twice in Kickstarter history. The first of these took place in 2014, and the second and closest in 2020 with 429 successful projects. In 2021, the record reached 441 games, setting a “record after record”.
However, the total figure has fallen slightly. Last year, Ckstarter raised a total of $26 million. Although the number of games has increased this year, the amount of funding has fallen to $24 million. The record is in 2013 ($56 million), which hosted big games such as Tides of Numenera and Mighty No. 9.
Desktop games, which are more popular on Kickstarter, have also surpassed a very successful year. This category, which we call “boxed game”, also set new records in 2021.
And have you supported a Kickstarter project this year?
