Yuji Horii, creator of the Dragon Quest series, was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at this year’s Game Developers’ Choice Awards (GDC) held 22.si.
This award is given to developers who make a lasting impression in the gaming world.
In his statement about the award, Horii described the events that brought him into the world of gaming, saying “thank you so much for awarding me the prestigious GDC Lifetime Achievement award.” Horii loved to read manga when she was little, so she always wanted to be a manga writer. At university, he took important steps towards realizing this dream, started drawing manga, prepared illustrations and articles for magazines, and worked as a freelance writer. “Then something happened that changed everything – I met the home computer,” says Horii.
Horii, who learned to code on his own and started writing games for his entertainment, participated in and won the game programming competition organized by enix at the time (now Square Enix;i). That’s what started his career in the gaming world.
Hojii, who loved RSOs like Wizardry and Ultima, decided to make his own version and turned out to be Dragon Quest.
“For me, Dragon Quest is like a manga, opening with short dialogues. It’s like a squad you can play on your computer. My team and I are currently working on dragon quest XII, the newest game in the series,” Horii said.
Thank you for introducing us to a delicious series like Dragon Quest.
