Sweden’s Embracer Group has spent $8.1 billion making a total of 62 acquisitions since the beginning of 2020. Embracer Group, which has become the largest gaming company in Europe in terms of market capital with these acquisitions, includes giant names such as Gearbox, Saber, THQ Nordic.
Embracer Group will continue its aggressive acquisitions from now on. In fact, the firm’s CEO, Lars Wingefors, told the Financial Times that they plan to buy a similar number in the coming months and years. So they’re planning about 60 acquisitions again, and they’ve forked out billions of dollars for it.
Wingefors also announced that they want to invest in free-to-play games and plan to expand their operations to countries such as the United Kingdom, the United States, Poland, France and China.
Embracer Group has a market capitalization of about $9.9 billion and has 15 game development studios and 10 business groups. Among the acquisitions, asmodee is the highest paid for, which they bought for $2.75 billion. Embracer also bought Dark Horse Media, one of America’s leading comic book publishers, last month, but it was not disclosed how much it cost.
Embracer’s game philosophy is pretty good, too. They prefer to develop more games than lean on a few hit games themselves. “If you make one game, your business risk is huge, but if you make 200 games like ours, you reduce the risk,” wingefors says.
