Erik Wolpaw, co-author of Portal and Portal 2, said Valve wants him to start the third game in the series as soon as possible. Wolpaw, who has also worked on psychonauts, Half-Life 2: Episode One and Two, Left 4 Dead and Half-Life Alyx, thinks he’s getting older.
“We have to start portal 3. This is my message… Who he needs to go to now,” Wolpaw said. We are rapidly approaching the point where we think we will be too old to work in Portal 3, so we have to do this now.”
Wolpaw says he would like to work on the third game himself: “I would love to do the third game. I’ll accept to work on a new Portal without blinking, but it’s not something I can do on my own.”
Wolpaw seems pretty excited about it, but Valve knows that the intensity of it is also a bit of a hindrance to new games. “Although valve employees are thought to be constantly sipping gin and tonics by the pool, everyone works. So you have to hire a lot of people from the jobs you were working on at the time and work on something else. In this case, this thing would be Portal 3.”
Portal and Portal 2 are among the most creative, high quality and inspiring puzzle games of all time. It would be great news for all of us if the series got to game three.
