Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda said it was important that Square Enix games sell well around the world, but trying to emulate western games would be the wrong decision.
Explaining the issue, Matsuda said: “Today, the gaming market has become global. If you’re not recognized in the world, you’re not doing a good job. With the industry so developed, Japanese developers can’t make good games if they try to emulate Western games. The designs of monsters, visual and auditory effects are all part of cultural richness. Players around the world know that’s what makes the Japanese Japanese Japanese. Their game is really good.
It is important to expand into foreign markets, but it is not enough just to do something for them.”
Square Enix is currently the team that incorporates Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal studios and develops major series such as Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts.
