Over the past year, Tencent has made a name for itself with an aggressive growth and expansion plan on the western gaming scene. While the Chinese company has been reasonably successful in gaining a place in the gaming industry, it seems that not all progress has been met with such positivity and optimism.
They turned down a $100 million offer.
David Jaffe, the original designer of the Twisted Metal game series, allegedly turned down a $100 million job offer from Tencent. David Jaffe says Tencent rejected the offer because it is a Chinese company, according to a recent Sacred Symbola+ report. “I don’t want to do business with such a company, such a government, and I don’t have a product to sell to China,” he reportedly said.
In fact, tencent’s purchased studio list is quite long. The list stretches from Klei Entertainment (Mark of Ninja, Don’t Starve) to Turtle Rock Studios (Back 4 Blood, Evolve). Jaff, however, was not interested in adding his name to this list based on his principles. “In China, if you go online and write or say something bad, you’re taken off the street,” Jaffe said. To that end, tencent allegedly immediately rejected the offer, which appeared to have come from its western executives, without thinking.
