Infinity Ward decided to make some changes to the series with Call of Duty: Ghost, released in 2013. This decision was to get out of the Spec Ops co-op structure of the Modern Warfare series and do something a little more zombie-mode. That’s how Extinction mode was born. Extinction is a game mode called Cryptids, based on clearing the territory occupied by ancient aliens that existed long before dinosaurs.
In the zombie mode we are familiar with, the map had a round structure. In Extinction mode, the map is large and vertical. Although it didn’t sound as loud as zombie mode, it had its own audience. Now, according to a new report, there might have been such a mode in Infinite Warfere, but the studio wasn’t keen on the idea.
Infinity Ward doesn’t like the idea of space
Brian Bright and Lee Ross, the former developer of Call of Duty, recently spoke on Twitter about Extinction 2 mode. They said the developed mode includes real-time strategy mechanics and has a mechanic quite similar to Fortnite’s base-building mechanics. Other than that, a video was mentioned that was prepared but never released.
It was probably going to be an advertisement for the mode, but when the idea was shelved, it never reached us players. As the reason extintion 2 was shelved, Bright cited the studio’s concerns about taking the series into space. Bright also underlined that if this mode had continued, Infinity Warfare’s much-loved zombie mode would never have happened.
