Nightdive Studios produced the Shadowman and Quake remasters last year. The Quake remaster, in particular, was quite successful; 4K and widescreen support, improved models and lighting, new episodes from MachineGames and so on, we came up with a very nice remaster. It was even a nice detail that this remaster was free for the original Quake owners.
Nightdive is currently working on three separate remasters: SiN Reloaded, System Shock 2: Enhanced Edition, and Blade Runner: Enhanced Edition. If you say that a fourth can be added to these, why not?
According to Nightdive CEO Stephen Kick, after the Quake remaster, Cliff Bleszinski contacted Epic CEO Tim Sweeney on behalf of Nightdive. Bleszinski is one of the designers of the 1998 Unreal, and like Quake, he wanted Unreal to be remastered. Kick says, “If you want that to happen, text Tim so he knows.”
Responding to the message, Bleszinski said, “I’m not saying anything for legal reasons right now.” So whether Tim Sweeney has received the green light or whether they’re trying to create public pressure, that part is unclear. But it would also be great if such an influential game could meet the players again in a remastered state.
