Konami’s epoch-defining horror game series Slient Hill has previously been adapted for the big screen. Silent Hill, first directed by Christophe Gans in 2006, was brought to the big screen six years later in 2012 by M.J. Bassett as Silent Hill: Revelation. Although both films greatly disappointed the fans, it is obvious that the 2012 model film inflicted more severe wounds. But Gans, the original film’s director, has revealed that he is writing a script for a new Silent Hill movie during the pandemic.
Speaking to Jeux Video, Gans said that staying at home during the pandemic has been good for him and encouraged him to write a script. Talking about his plans for Silent Hill, the director’s explanations are as follows;
I can say that this is not the Silent Hill I imagined in my year. This is a Silent Hill for today’s brand-savvy audience. I also know that Silent Hill is a really huge gaming brand. It’s a true work of art. The people who thought of Silent Hill in the first place really put out the character. They are really solid people. My biggest goal right now is to adapt Silent Hill for today’s audience.
It’s clear that today’s horror movies don’t look like the horror movies of 2006. They look much better. I’m not saying that the horror films of 2007 weren’t good, but every genre is evolving. That’s what I’m doing. I’ve seen some great original horror movies recently, and if Silent Hill has those seeds, even if it can reflect that, we can do amazing things. Silent Hill has always been an extraordinary game ahead of its time.”
Explaining very clearly both his view of horror films, his admiration for Silent Hill and his expectations from the new film, Gans managed to make him forget the 2006 film for a moment. If, as the director says, he can take Silent Hill to the next level, we have a great story and we can be quite scared on the big screen. Gans has said the film will be set in 2023 and will come out next year, but no official announcement has yet been made.
