In 2018, it was stated that a small team was formed for this project under the roof of Playstation Studios and that this team aims to join the big studios. But Sony is reportedly disbanding the team because of its obsession with the main studio.
Sony disbanded the team later in the development phase and delivered the project back to one of its star studios, Naughty Dog. So the studio has been dismantled, but the Last of Us Remake PS5 project is said to still be under construction. It’s also said to have squeezed the work of Naughty Dog, which has already been revealed to be working on a new medieval-themed brand.
Jason Schreier wrote that Sony was avoiding risk and only prioritising its major studios. Sony’s obsession with the big studio has also reportedly caused a huge surge in other studios and across the company, causing confusion.
For example, a new decision was made for the Bend studio, which was once one of Sony’s favorites and last appeared with Days Gone. One of the biggest groves of Bend Studio, which was commissioned to support Naught Dog last year and is scheduled to help with the projects, was the disbandment of the team and the replacement of the existing studio as Naughty Dog North.
In fact, from 2018, there were frequent rumors that Sony had formed a secret team in San Diego and that it was developing a new Uncharted game. It has been claimed that this studio is not actually uncharted, but is working on the Last of Us Remake PS5 project, which is also the subject of the news. Moreover, this team is said to have struggled to find the support expected from the very beginning.
