Valve Steam Deck features, which were announced as handheld consoles, were dropped without anyone noticing. Valve was also having difficulty delivering the handheld console, which has been on sale for several months, to its owners due to the pandemic.
Recently, Valve said it was overcoming these issues and increasing product shipments, but now it’s been noticed that some Steam Deck devices have changed their hardware features.
Which Valve Steam Deck features have been downgraded and why?
According to a recent report by Hardwarelux magazine, the change is available on Steam Deck’s English product page. When the same page is examined in Turkish or German, the lack of this important information does not escape attention. Therefore, Valve’s Steam Deck page is not the same up-to-date in every language.
According to the specifications, which are written in English, some 256-GByte and 512-Gbyte models will be delivered with PCIe Gen 3 x2 SSD hard drives instead of PCIe Gen 3 x4. The difference between these SSDs is that the x4 version is connected with 4 lanes and the x2 version with 2 lanes.
Valve states that this hardware difference between the updated technical features of Steam Deck does not affect the gaming experience in any way as a result of the trials. But according to Hardwarelux, cutting connections in half can make itself felt with slightly longer loading times.
No explanation has been given as to the reason for this change. However, according to the report, it was held in May and has not been announced so far. Therefore, those who expect a PCIe Gen 3 x4 in their new handheld console can learn at the last moment that the model that reaches them has perhaps a PCIe Gen 3 x2 SSD.
Valve had previously warned users who wanted to change parts of the device, “If you open the inside of the Steam Deck, you may die.” He also posted a video in which they fully opened the Steam Deck and showed the inside.
