The success of PUBG, Battlegrounds and Fortnite: Battle Royale is among the biggest reasons why modern battle royale games are heading in this direction. The success of these two games formed the basis of the games and competition that would be released in the following years. There’s sad news about Spellbreak , a free-to-play battle royale game that tries to add a fantasy setting to this popular subgenre.
Developer studio pulls the plug on Proletariat Spellbreak
Unfortunately, positive developments among this competition may not be enough alone to achieve financial success. As a result, developer studio Proletariat announced plans to end game development and shut down Spellbreak’s servers early next year.

The Proletariat studio informed the players about their decision in a blog post earlier in the day. The developer’s statement was quick and short, announcing the decision to close it and thanking the players for their support. Proletariat did not give a specific date to shut down the Spellbreak servers. But he said it would be in early 2023. Later, the blog post expressed his thanks to the fans of the game and informed them about the vision of the game. The blog post didn’t explicitly state why it closed the game, but the game’s low player count may be the most important factor.
So much so that according to SteamDB data, Spellbreak currently has 88 active players at the time of this writing. That’s less than the number of players needed for a match-up, even in the most popular battle royale games. It peaked at 5,500 players two years ago and has slowly declined since then. Spellbreak’s huge increase in Twitch viewership has also never been able to increase the number of players. While all of these reasons seem sad and unfortunate to the Spellbreak gamers and fans, this end seems inevitable.
