As stated in a blog post on the Halo Waypoint official site, it was said that every progress made in the game will be preserved, regardless of whether Halo Infinite coop is played or the only one. Players can decide to play coop after going a little solo and then go back to playing alone. In both sessions, players’ progress, items collected, equipment found and upgrades made will remain intact.
“Gone are the days of playing someone else’s game without making progress,” the developers say. There is a problem that may arise here. Some players may be more advanced in terms of story than their friends with whom they play the Halo Infinite coop campaign mode. For this, they say they will use a system they call “No Spartans Left”. They explain it this way:
“When players join Fireteam, they will choose their own save slots, and the game will tailor the execution of missions to all players’ save files. Tasks that have been done by all team members will be marked as done, while those that have not been done will be marked as not done.”

This system will take the lowest denominator of everyone’s story progression. So if one member of the team is behind in the story and hasn’t done the task, the other members will appear as undone.
