New books coming for Assassin’s Creed series
Ubisoft is currently working with a vast network of streaming partners, each with its own expertise, to further develop the Assassin’s Creed universe. Aconyte Books, Editis and Starfish are developing original novels in their own languages (English, French and Chinese). On the side of comics and graphic novels; Glenat published French graphic novels, Dark Horse Comics released an Assassin’s Creed comic book miniseries in English, and Ulab developed original manhuas. On the digital side; Chinese partner Ximalaya is about to launch his first Assassin’s Creed story podcast, while Korean studio Redice will release its first Assassin’s Creed webtoon.
Ubisoft has created three tags to help fans choose what to read to better classify their upcoming Assassin’s Creed transmedia offerings:
- Classics: Direct adaptations based on the stories of video games.
- Chronicles: New adventures featuring your favorite iconic Assassins.
- Originals: New stories with new heroes and periods.
Some of the latest transmedia creations this year come from collaborations with talented Asian writers and artists, especially from China, Japan and Korea. These include several manhuas or webtoons currently in development. “While a large number of creators across Asia offer innovative content, the priority for Ubisoft has been to build new relationships with talented partners in the region,” said Julien Fabre, Ubisoft’s Editor-in-Chief.
Ubisoft aims to enrich the Assassin’s Creed universe with stories that resonate with original and local fans by bringing together talent from around the world to create new transmedia narratives. “We’re all consumers of stories. With this global vision and local approach, we’re trying to bring our fans new content that includes stories based on their familiar formats and cultural histories and their own,” adds Etienne Bouvier, Ubisoft Content Publication Manager.
