Netflix aims to create series like Star Wars and Harry Potter. According to Reuters Netflix’s plan is to create franchises that will span the range of movies, televisions, video games, and commercial products. Matthew Thunell, vice president of Netflix, said, “We want to have our own Star Wars, our own Harry Potter, and we’re working hard to do that.” “But those kinds of names aren’t created overnight like that.”
Thunell continued, “It has to start with the story itself. There are tremendously successful series like Stranger Things, which have a deep mythology, and also additional stories that can be animated or animated.”
I guess Stranger Things came to everyone’s mind first, but I personally don’t think there’s a good chance that the series is a Star Wars, a Harry Potter-level pop culture icon.
Stranger Things will say goodbye to us with its 5th season, but its story will not end there. The Duffer brothers, the creators of the series, have said that they have plans for a side series that will be 1000% different from the original series. The series also has toys, meaning it is also represented at the commercial product level. Netflix’s first steps into the world of video games were also through Stranger Things, and these Stranger Things games can be played on the service even now. In other words, Thunell is actually saying that they made such an experiment while giving this example.
Let’s see how many years Netflix’s plan will bear fruit.
