Anyone who has played Baldur’s Gate 2 and the expansion pack Siege of Dragonspear will recognize the voice of the main villain there wherever they hear it. But we regret to say that that voice is no longer with us, David Warner has passed away at the age of 80 due to cancer. He had also appeared in many important films such as Titanic.
Baldur’s Gate 2 villain Jon Irenicus has passed away
Jon Irenicus’ voice actor David Warner, who appeared as the main villain in Baldur’s Gate 2’s Siege of Dragonspear expansion, has died at the age of 80. The cause of his death was reported to be cancer. Family members made the following statement:
“Over the past 18 months, he has approached his diagnosis with a characteristic grace and dignity. We will be greatly missed by his family and friends and will be remembered as a kind-hearted, generous and caring man, partner and father whose extraordinary work touched the lives of many people over the years. His departure broke our hearts very much.”
David Warren began his acting career playing Shakespeare on stage, but soon moved on to films where he became known for his performances in classics such as The Omen, Titanic, Time Bandits and Tron. He has also appeared in productions such as Doctor Who, Star Trek, and Wallander.
He began his work in the game industry in 1996 and has since appeared as the voice-over of projects such as Privateer 2: The Darkening, Baldur’s Gate 2, Star Wars: Force Commander, Descent 3 and Star Trek: Klingon Academy. He also voiced Jon Irenicus himself in Siege of Dragonspear, which was released as part of the 2016 Enhanced Edition of Baldur’s Gate 2.
Since the news of his death was announced, he has been praised by his colleagues in all the sectors where he worked. We extend our condolences to his grieving family and the Baldur’s Gate community.
