Konami made a nice surprise last month, announcing Getsufumaden: Undying Moon. In 1987, Getufumaden: Undying Moon, which was published exclusively in Japan, brought up Getsu Fuma Den once again, thus meeting western players. Moreover, on Steam on May 13th, we were also pleased with the game that entered Early Access;40 TL;
While the game was in early access, we had a quick interview with Konami and asked the questions we were curious about the game. At first we tried to get information about other projects from their mouths, but we forgot how discreet Konami was about these issues:)
OGZ: Among the many popular Konami games, you have chosen Getsu Fuma Den as your new project. Can we use this as a sign that old Konami games like Castlevania, Twinbee, even Ganbare Goemon will be resurrected?
Konami: Unfortunately, as the producer of GetsuFumaDen;
– The original Getsu Fuma Den had not been officially published in Western countries. Do you have any plans to release the original game in Western countries, just as you did with Kid Dracula?
yes! All players participating in the Early Access phase of the game on Steam will receive the original Famicom version of GetsuFumaDen; in addition to some other bonuses. These will not be added to the standard version of the game, but we also plan to add them to the Digital Deluxe version after release.
– Getsu Fuma Den was one of the most popular 2D action scroller games during the NES era, even one of the leading games of the roguelike genre. Today’s game is described as a direct roguelike; how did you make this transition and how will this transition affect game mechanics?
We wanted this game to be a new game for today’s gamers, so we adopted the Roguevania 2D action genre; We thought it was more suitable for the original game, and it was clearly a more popular genre. We’ve further enhanced gameplay by combining random elements of the Roguelike genre with 2D action of the Metroidvania genre and exploration elements of GetsuFumaDen.
Roguelike also means character enhancements and the protection of weapons in repeated gameplay, which gives players an advantage.
– The first trailer showed us that Getsu Fuma Den was heavily fueled by Japanese mythology and had a unique visual style, but the original game also showed Western influences, both in gameplay and as a story. Can you tell us about the change in this visual selection?
In fact, I can say that we are inspired by most independent games that have completely adopted freedom in the drawing style and do not care much about the major trends in the gaming industry. As a Japanese game studio, we thought we should make a visual design that could attract worldwide attention to japanese drawing style. There are already many games with Japanese style, so we have adopted the old style of parchment drawings that feed off the Japanese middle age and process the theme of hell, which is also at the heart of the game.
– GetsuFumaDen: Is Undying Moon a remake, re-enactment, or a sequel to the original game?
GetsuFumaDen: Undying Moon takes place nearly 1,000 years after the original game. The story is based on the getsu clan generation, which the main character of the original game was founded. Although this game uses konami’s old IP; neither the remaster nor the remakei of the original game. For players who love that game, we’ve preserved the original’s 2D action, but all the other elements are new. We want new, younger players to enjoy this game like a new IP.
– Thank you so much for your time with us.
Thank you, sir!
