Electronic Arts CEO Andrew Wilson said they have no intention of turning Codemasters into an EA studio, and that the studio will retain its own identity, just like Respawn Entertainment.
Titanfall developer Respawn Entertainment developed Apex Legends after it was acquired by Electronic Arts.
“As in Respawn, our intention was not to come and take over Codemasters, but to turn Codemasters into another Electronic Arts studio, but to take advantage of the opportunity. There are incredible creative talents in this industry. We don’t see much of a positive side in telling these creative talents what to do. But we want to give them access to what we have because of our position in the industry,” wilson says.
Wilson said EA has an “impressive closet” filled with popular IPs, technology, marketing power and a huge network of players, and Codemasters can access it as it wishes.
“That’s what happened with Respawn; we gave Codemasters the keys to the closet, they can come and get whatever they need from the closet whenever they want, but they’re going to keep being themselves, because that’s what made them special anyway,” Wilson says.
It’s all well and good, but someone has to tell Wilson that the price of Codemasters games is going to take flight from local pricing, at least for players like us. F1 2021 will probably see the lowest sales figures in its history in some countries, so.
