Microsoft has taken over the publishing rights to future games from The Outer Worlds.
The Outer Worlds, a first-person sci-fi role-playing game developed by Obsidian Entertainment, was released in October 2019 under the release of Private Division, part of Take-Two Interactive for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, and sold more than 3 million copies.
Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick said that although they see The Outer Worlds as a long-term series and are committed to The Outer Worlds brand, a Private Division spokesperson said they will not be involved in the future games of The Outer Worlds and that Microsoft and Obsidian Entertainment will be behind the wheel.
A Private Division spokesman said they will continue to support the first game, including the Switch version of The Outer Worlds’ Murder on Eridanos downloadable content, and are excited to see where Microsoft and Obsidian Entertainment will take the series in the future.
Microsoft acquired Obsidian Entertainment in 2018.
