Splitgate, the Halo break with the portal, encountered an interest that 1047 Games could never have imagined during the beta, which was a huge success. It was normally expected to debut on July 27, along with version 1.0 of the game, but the server postponed the release until August to increase their capacity. Now they’ve announced that they’re abandoning that plan and that the game will remain in beta for an indefinite period of time.
Ian Proulx, the studio’s CEO, says they decided to keep the game in open beta for longer, having been downloaded over 10 million times in the first 30 days of the beta. When the number of simultaneous players in the game jumped from around 4,000 to 175,000 at a time, they realized they couldn’t handle it.
In fact, it doesn’t hurt anyone that the game remains in open beta, fortnite’s battle royale mode remained in beta for almost two years.
“The situation we are in is much more than just dealing with server capacity. We are focused on keeping the game stable for our fans, and are evaluating simultaneous player capacity to minimize player waiting times. We want to do this right, we want to be ready for the huge number of players that can happen when we officially debut, while continuing to support beta with frequent updates and new features.
