Outer Wilds was released by publisher Annapurna Interactive and developer Mobius Digital for Xbox One in May 2019, for PC via the Epic Games Store, for PlayStation 4 in October 2019, again for PC via Steam on June 18, 2020, and then for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series on September 15.
In addition, the latest Outer Wilds: Echoes of the Eye expansion has been added to the game. The expansion debuted on September 28, 2021 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Steam, and PC through the Epic Games Store.
With the latest update, the alien race Hearthian was introduced. Hearthian debuted in October 2018. The alien race known as the Hearthians is an amphibious race with four eyes, little sense of self-preservation, and great curiosity for the outside world. Their home planet is Timber Hearth, which came in the previous update. On their home planet, inspired by redwoods, the Hearthians work together to better learn and understand the solar system in which they live. The Hearthian space program was founded by Outer Wilds Ventures, Hornfels, Gossan, Slate and Feldspar. In its early years, Outer Wilds Ventures collected objects of interest (often of Nomai origin) and brought them back to their homes, further enriching the culture and technology of the Hearthians. Many of these technologies were used to develop Hearthian exploration technology, resulting in systems such as the ability to remotely retrieve an exploration vehicle by artificial gravity or warp technology. As the latest Hearthian navigator, you are the first to be equipped with a tool that will allow you to translate Nomai text, the first of its kind. You and your friend Hal will develop this technology to better understand the ancient mysteries that lie dormant in the solar system.
In a game like Outer Wilds, hidden places are hard to find. That is why you should investigate all the details with delicacy and be careful in the depths of this space. You may find a top hidden item or sign from somewhere you never expected. Given that the entire purpose of the game is to uncover the mysteries of the finely crafted solar system, it can be difficult to determine what is really a secret and what is a well-hidden piece. In this list, we will share with you 8 mysterious events in the Outer Wilds game. Here is our list:
1) The Fig Backer Satellite
Designed to resemble the real-life Voyager 1 satellite, the Backers Satellite in Outer Wilds can be found speeding around the solar system from the beginning of the game. Scroll down to the Hourglass Twins to locate them and start scanning the nearby area. At the end of the scan, the satellite will be targeted by the ship’s autopilot. However, it will not have a name to identify that object.
When players arrive, they can look at a slideshow of photos presented on the satellite’s monitors by the game’s financial backers.
On the side, there’s a proclamation stating that the satellite was launched at 9 a.m. on Dec. 28, 2799, and players will hear a continuous audio recording of someone saying, “We’re off, like a dirty shirt in the wash.”
2) Hidden Nomai Scroll
On the surface of Brittle Hollow, located between the Brittle Hollow (Gravitational Ball) and the falling Nomai escape capsule, there is a Nomai Scroll (scroll) partially embedded in the planet’s surface. You might overlook the Nomai Scroll as it blends so well with the rocky environment, but don’t worry, you can find it next to a large tree.
The Nomai Scroll can be taken to any Nomai slot, many of which can be found below the surface of Brittle Hollow. Once plugged in, the player’s interpreter will read the Nomai Scroll as a smiley face, followed by a QR code displaying. When scanned, the QR code will display the text “Pivot’s Easter egg”.
3) Gabbro’s Weeping Angels
Fans of the Doctor Who series may have some scary moments while dealing with quantum objects in Outer Wilds. In Timber Hearth, there’s a place called Quantum Grove where players learn the applications of quantum mechanics in the game. However, in that place is also found a mysterious poem written on wood.
This poem was written by Gabbro, one of the astronauts of Outer Wilds Ventures. When players visit Gabbro at Giant’s Deep and ask them about poetry, they state that they want to create quantum art, including creature sculptures. These sculptures that Gabbro mentions are a reference to Weeping Angels, a terrifying villain acting from Doctor Who.
4) The Terminator Nomai
While there are a few clues that can be found in Hollow’s Lantern, there aren’t many discoveries to be made as Brittle Hollow is teeming with molten lava lakes on its moon. However, as each cycle progresses and Hollow’s Lantern ejects much of this lava into space, some things hidden beneath the lava surface will reveal themselves.
One such hidden object is the skeleton of a Nomai, which apparently died when it fell into the moon’s lava. However, the pose in which Nomai died (with both arms out of the lava) is apparently a reference to the movie Terminator 2: Judgment Day.
5) The Korok Seed
With the Outer Wilds Echoes of the Eye DLC, several hidden secrets about The Legend of Zelda have been added to the game. This secret is found in The Endless Canyon, an area of The Stranger’s simulation that features a giant building with multiple levels where several Pursuers live.
To find this Easter egg, players must turn off the lights in the building opposite the canyon using the device located at the entrance to this part of the simulation. Then cross the canyon and head towards the large stage on the left side of the building. Go up to the balcony right next to the stage and follow it to a new door that only appears when the lights go out. Avoiding Pursuer patrolling there, climb up the stairs inside and jump from the window at the top to the roof below. Follow the roof to the top and there will be a single Korok Seed located at the top of the roof. It doesn’t raise the player’s inventory, but it looks cute.
6) Portrait Room
In this area, known as the Hidden Gorge, there is an art gallery preserved by a Pursuer along the same road leading to the Forbidden Archives. However, you can log in to this gallery after killing Pursuers.
The first picture on the left is actually an imaginary wall. By jumping through it, players will find a ladder going down. At the bottom of the staircase there is a room filled with candles, an unusual portrait of a Pursuer hanging on the wall. There is a unique music playing only in this room.
7) Comet Cat
This mysterious cat found in the Submerged Structure area is hidden in the farthest corners of the island that makes up this space. Crossing bridges and trees, beyond a series of rocks and on the edge of the island, there is a rock with a candle on it. When you light the candle, a slight sound will make a purring sound of the cat.
After lighting this candle, players must retreat, put the lantern on the ground, and then move a little outside the area. This actually puts the game in the “admin mode” that is taught when players progress far enough in the DLC. When they approach the candle again, there will be a cute little cat curled up on the rock.
8) The Mysterious Dark Bramble Seed
Deep within the spooky labyrinth of Dark Bramble, there is seemingly a seed that only goes to itself. Players can easily dismiss this seed as a red herring. However, firing Scout Launcher into the seed reveals something even more frightening.
The image above is a picture of a Dark Bramble seed surrounded by corpses, and these corpses are all human. Additionally, set in Shakespeare’s world of Hamlet, it’s a reference to developer Golden Glitch’s play Elsinore, released the same year as Outer Wilds.
