Disco Elysium: The Final Cut, released on March 30, failed to get the green light from the Australian ratings committee and was banned from selling in the country. The committee’s evaluation report stated that this was because “the game handles and demonstrates themes such as sex, drug use or commitment, crime, brutality, violence in a way that offends standards of morality, decency and community conformity accepted by adults, and therefore should not be rated.”
New information indicates that Disco Elysium: The Final Cut has been reassessed and is allowed to be sold with an age limit of 18+.
The review committee’s new report said “there are enough factors to deter drug use and thus are eligible for the R18+ rating:)
“The review committee’s opinion is that there are deterrent factors associated with drug use behavior in the game, and even regular drug use has negative consequences for the player’s progress in the game. Game mechanics are designed to deter and punish drug consumption.” This explanation seems ridiculous to me, because the drugs in the game have both positive and negative effects. For example, psyche improves your property while lowering your health, etc. Anyway, banning the game from the start was ridiculous, after all, there was no point in banning The Final Cut when Disco Elysium was free. I think they did some cover-up work after the reactions.
