Gearbox released an update for Borderlands 3 last year that allows cross-play between PC, Stadia and Xbox versions of the game. However, the feature was not included in Sony versions, and fans of the game on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 were only able to play Borderlands 3 within themselves. Looks like that’s going to change soon. In a press release, Gearbox announced that this cross-game will be activated on PS4 and PS5, although no specific time frame has been given.
Borderlands 3 PS5-PS4 Crossplay finally happens
In May 2021, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford announced that the Borderlands 3 team “must remove cross-game support for PlayStation consoles by the publisher.” Pitchford did not elaborate on why 2K Games should be removed, but there was a lot of speculation at the time that this could be related to royalty payments for Sony.
In the past, PlayStation has been hesitant to embrace cross-play and cross-recording in its games, especially games like Fortnite and Minecraft. These issues with Epic Games and Microsoft were finally resolved, and it seems that 2K Games and Sony have similarly come up with some kind of solution.
The Borderlands 3 players must have been very happy with the news. Cross-play has been a great way for players to enjoy the same games together, regardless of platform, potentially extending the life of games.
