The Callisto Protocol is banned in Japan. A dispute between the game’s producer, Striking Distance Studios, and Japan’s rating agency (CERO) led to the game being cancelled completely in Japan. The reason for this disagreement was stated to be that the game contained excessive brutality. Japan is known to be very conservative about violence in games. Callisto Protocol, whose construction process was completed, received the first news of the ban from Japan.
Callisto Protocol banned in Japan, parties disagree
The statement published in Japanese from the official Twitter account of The Callisto Protocol (from English to Turkish) can be translated as follows:
“The Japanese version of The Callisto Protocol has been cancelled. The game does not exceed Japan’s CERO rating criteria at this stage. If we changed the content of the game, we wouldn’t be able to deliver the experience players expected.”
Japanese players who pre-order the game will receive a refund. Japanese players can only play the game at this stage by acquiring it from other countries. The Callisto Protocol, one of the most anticipated games of this year, will be released on Playstation, Xbox and PC on December 2. The game’s release date put extra strain on the studio’s employees, working 6 or even 7 days a week, came to the fore in September, and the game’s director Glen Schofield apologized for his tweets praising this situation.
