Scott Cawthon, creator of Five Night at Freddy’s, has announced he will retire. Cawthon’s decision must have been influenced by news of the donation earlier this month.
Cawthon’s revelation that he made substantial donations to conservative committees and various politicians, including Donald Trump, Devin Nunes, Ben Carson and Mitch McConnell, drew a backlash from FNAF players who opposed it. In particular, FNAF’s fans in the LGBTQ+ community reacted negatively to the news because Cawthon’s donors were perhaps among the most anti-LGBTQ+ names in America. So you can easily guess the value of this in our country:)
However, amid the intense backlash on Twitter, Cawthon’s lengthy article on Reddit managed to ease the tension of the environment. Although Cawthon said “I’m not going to apologize for this,” he said he believed in equality, science, common sense, and thought all of this could coexist, and that the only reason he responded to these discussions was because he knew there were so many LGBT members in his fan base. I suggest you read the full statement.
“I’m not doing this for the money anymore, I’m doing it because I enjoy it,” Cawthon said at the end of his message. If people think I’m doing more harm than good, maybe I should retire.”
Scott Cawthon wrote in his new message, “I miss playing for my kids. I just miss doing it for fun, and even though I’m incompetent, I miss doing RPGs. I’m just saying this to let you know that I’m retiring. I received a lot of messages of support and love last week, especially from the LBGTQ community. The kindness you showed me was incredible.”
This does not mean the end of the FNAF series. Cawthon also said someone would take over the flag, someone he chose and trusted.
