The other day, the first gameplay trailer of Return to Monkey Island was released, so we could see the drawing style in much more detail that we had an idea with screenshots before. This is a brand new Monkey Island game, a Monkey Island game that will come from the creators of the series. Those who made constructive criticisms aside, but those who spewed hatred at Ron Gilbert in comments just because his drawing style was very different from the first two games (and the others) offended the master.
Gilbert was sharing the game’s progress on the Grumpy Gamer website. In a message yesterday, he said he would no longer write anything else about Return to Monkey Island, which was due to comments at the level of personal assault.
Gilbert explained that the negative comments were too much for him now, so he would not turn off the comment system and share about the game. Currently the site is offline.
Grumpy Gamer is a personal blog that I have been following with great admiration for years, Gilbert has a lot of messages that serve as a lesson to game developers, self-critical articles, advice on what to look for when developing an adventure game, entertaining messages. However, after Return to Monkey Island, there was an increase in the number of new users, and most of these users were the kind that left negative comments everywhere.
“I’m turning off comments. Some of them act cruelly, and I am constantly forced to delete personal attack comments. It’s a great game and everyone on the team is proud of it. Whether you play or not, don’t ruin it for others. I’m not going to post about the game anymore. They took away my pleasure in sharing,” Gilbert says.
Here are a few examples of these comments:
Return to Monkey Island is directed by Rex Crowle, one of the designers of games such as LittleBigPlanet, Tearaway, Knights and Bikes.
It’s not a bad thing that Return to Monkey Island has a different visual style. After the first two games, the series had always had different visual styles, keeping up with the times. At first, Curse was strange, Escape was strange, and Tales was strange. Moreover, the visual style of the game is not bad at all in my opinion. To those who, after all these years have been waiting for a new Monkey Island game, to hijack the enthusiasm of both Ron Gilbert, Dave Grossman and Dominic Armato, there is really nothing to say.
