One of the most memorable aspects of the Black Isle plays was the exquisite, colorful character portraits. In fact, Black Isle used a simple technique to create these portraits, making the actual portraits fantastic by going through a few processes. If I’m not mistaken, I even wrote a tutorial about how these portraits were created in Neverwinter Nights in my Strategist column in 2002:) Choosing a portrait for our character on the character creation screen, even downloading portrait packs and seeing if there was something like our dream between them was one of the most enjoyable tasks of that period.
AI visual programs are very popular these days, and two of them are leading the way: DALL·E 2 and Midjourney. Indie app developer and documentary editor Alex Hay wondered if DALL·E 2 would paint a character portrait for RPGs, and the results are truly spectacular.
For example, would you take a look at Minsc below?
“Portrait of a giant bald barbarian with purple face paint. On his shoulder sits a hamster. The scene was taken at sunset, the man has leather armor on him.”
Of course, these programs produce 4 to 6 images at a time, as you know, this package including the above picture is as follows:
For example, look at the following image: “Eye-catching portrait of a Chinese rogue. Under his black hooded cloak goes brown leather armor. It stands in an attic, dusts are selected in the sun’s rays.”
Similarly, let me leave you with a few more examples that are produced with such sentences and that I think look great:
If you wish, you can participate in the Midjourney and DALL·E 2 betas to produce such visuals.
