The biggest challenge of being an independent producer is that you don’t have the budget to make the play you dream of. That’s why independent producers often have to either completely ignore important trends or produce games by adopting them after the weather has run out. Battle Royales became very popular at one point. Everyone found their game, and the big producers went out of their way to protect what they’d won. Meanwhile, independents have begun releasing their new BR games. At one point, there was a brief burst of automatic fighting that flashed and faded. Dota Underlords, Hearthstone Battlegrounds, Auto Chess.
Despot’s Game, just as I described it, is a game that’s come from far behind and is on sale. Fortunately, Despot’s Game is an automated fighting game, as well as an additional weapon, which is the “Rougelike mechanics” that change with each gameplay. Some have described the game as Rougelike, while others interpret it as a complete automated fighting game. I don’t know which one will be decided in the future, but it’s also true that it has great potential.
Despots Game is a sequel to Despotism, in which small people and complex machines come to life. The art style is almost the same. It starts with a small party of the same little people, and you try to survive in an increasingly complex maze by assigning them to different classes with the costume options that come immediately after. As long as you can afford the game, you can get as many people and costumes as you want. However, there is a serious shortage of food in the crowded crowds. There are three types of rooms in the game, and you always spend food moving your men from one room to another. In this case, it’s better to build an army of powerful units with the best costumes and wait for them to survive.
The furniture system is apparently very sweet. From Pretzel to the Gravity weapon, there are plenty of interesting items and classes in the game. If you’re throwing something, you’re a “Thrower,” for example, when you have three throwers, the stuff you throw starts to explode, and they can be particularly effective against crowded crowds. Shooters get attack speed, while Warlocks come together to drive a massive tentecker into the battlefield. Two-class items in Underlords and Dota Chess are not available in this game. This inevitably causes Despot’s Game to rotate over the same characters. There’s no need to read guides or watch videos like that. The more you play, the more you learn which item is stronger, which class is more effective at the end of the game, and if you’re not crazy, you don’t break those combinations.
Please don’t let it end
In addition to the singularity problem in the classrooms, Despots Game also has problems with survival mechanics. Towards the end of the game, for example, you came across a difficult group of enemies and survived by inflicting great casualties. It is not possible to beat them because the next room will have either the same enemy or a similar level of difficulty. And you inevitably end up on your way, knowing there won’t be an escape. If there was a mechanic like hiding soldiers without putting them on the field, the player could at least be able to overcome them with his people in the pocket.
Bottom line, I think Despot’s Game has serious potential. There’s still no game that stands out from Auto Battlers. With a little balance and a little variety, you can suddenly have a game that you can’t get rid of for hours every day. As long as the team takes their job seriously and considers the comments from the players. Jumping on the Despot’s Game train early doesn’t make much sense at the moment, but there’s a good chance it’s going to be an important game in the long run.
PRO:
+ Enjoyable to play over and over again
+ Enemies in general are interesting and need special measures.
CONS:
– Rougelike elements limited for now
– Low diversity between classes
– Serious balance issues
INTERIM DECISION:
Despots Game has the potential to be a great game. But that doesn’t mean they don’t have a long way to go to get to that point.
