Elite Dangerous: Odyssey, which came out with high hopes, would change the face of Elite Dangerous, but it didn’t work out as expected. This update, which allows players to exit ships and step onto planetary surfaces, contained so many bugs when it debuted that it still failed to correct steam;d s grade even after successive patches.
Because the Odyssey’s problems were so deep, Frontier Developments found the solution to stop developing console versions and direct all its energy to the PC version.
Frontier CEO David Braben says: “It’s no secret that the Odyssey’s output is far behind ideal. Since its release in May 2021, we have worked tirelessly to improve the Odyssey experience on PC; We continued to support both pre- and post-Odyssey versions.
But over the last few months we have been thinking about what is the best way forward and while it is a difficult decision we have decided to stop all console enhancements. We need to move forward with the story of the game, and in order to do that, we need to focus on one version. Elite Dangerous will continue with critical updates on consoles as it is, but we will now focus solely on delivering new content updates to the post-Odssey version on PC.”
The console versions’ servers will remain open and players will be able to play Elite Dangerous: Horizons content. Although it is not known to what extent elite dangerous distributes players between PC and console, this is still negative news for console players, although there are few of them. Especially considering that there is no way to transfer console accounts to PC for now, this decision will leave console players in a very difficult position.
Frontier announced that Elite Dangerous: Odyssey will also not be developed for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X consoles.
