Blizzard managed to surprise us all by announcing that Diablo Immortal would come not only to mobile devices, but also to PC. Since it is developed as a free to play mobile game in essence, Diablo Immortal is a game that will handle the monetization part with micropayments.
Joe Grubb, the chief designer of the game, made statements on the subject and announced that the micropayments in the game will be completely optional and will have no effect on the gameplay.
“Optional purchases are just a bonus, they don’t affect the main gameplay in any way. You need skills to play your class, to succeed as a barbarian, you have to know how to play barbarian,” Grubb said, adding that there won’t be things like experience points to level up equipment or characters between microtransactions. The sentence “The best way to gain power in Diablo Immortal is to play the game” was one of the main ideas of the game.
Rod Fergusson, managing director of the series, says:
“I think what’s most impressive is that you can play every aspect of a game like this for free. The whole story is free, raids, Cycle of Strife, everything is free. We’ll support the game with new regions, new dungeons, and new character classes, and they’ll be free.”
Both names are also confident that the game’s free-to-play nature will bring new players to the series.
