Elden Ring director Hidetaka Miyazaki stresses that Elden Ring is more “finishable” than previous Souls games. In an interview with Playstation Blog, Miyazaki, the director of Elden Ring, emphasized that the biggest difference from Elden Ring’s previous Soulslike games is the open world and new items and methods to discover.
Elden Ring director talked about the difficulty of the game and its design philosophies
Miyazaki says, “I hope that new players will discover the game by moving at their own pace without stress.””
“I know we make games that are going to be very difficult for the players, but we also want to give the player the satisfaction of overcoming a great challenge. But I don’t want new players to worry about this challenge…”
Miyazaki continues:
“My advice to new players is that when they feel they are at a stalemate, they can leave that part behind for a while and move elsewhere in the open world of the game. So they can experience a sense of progress without banging their heads against the walls.”
Miyazaki also addressed the difficulty of Souls games and the fact that producers “don’t add difficulty levels” to the game. Miyazaki said that he justified these discussions, but that their main goal when designing their games was to give the players the feeling of “overcoming problems”.
Elden Ring’s open world and freer character development structure seem to be the biggest helper for players who hang out at certain points in the game.
