The EVO fighting game tournament was to make a major comeback under the name EVO 2021 Showcase, which organizers announced had been cancelled.
“The ongoing effects of COVID-19 and the spread of the Delta variant have left us in a position to decide to cancel the EVO 2021 Showcase. Players invited to participate in the EVO 2021 Showcase represent some of the best fighters in the world. We are very sorry that we canceled the event.”
Not to be confused with the other EVO held this year, it was EVO 2021 Online. This was a tournament where 40 players were invited privately and will compete for a $125,000 prize money pool.
EVO 2020 was to be held as a fully online event due to COVID-19, but the future of the tournament was also dark when the main sponsors withdrew following some accusations. Following the resignation of EVO CEO Joey Cuellar, Sony had added EVO to its ranks.
EVO 2022 will be held face-to-face in Las Vegas on August 5-7, 2022. At least that’s the plan for now.
