According to FF 14 director Naoki Yoshida, Metaverse isn’t fun, and it doesn’t have to be. Therefore, the comparison of Metaverse and MMO’s is also illogical. On the Square Enix front, the view of metaverse is a little complicated. The head of Square Enix announced that they welcomed the NFT idea, but later announced that the idea had been abandoned.
Metaverse is not fun, the purpose of MMOs is to entertain
During last year’s “Metaverse frenzy”, there were different explanations from the gaming world. Gabe Newell said he did not understand the interest in Metaverse, which has been functioning as MEOs have been functioning for years. But according to Naoki Yoshida, also an MMO producer, there is a significant difference between MMO and Metaverse.
In an interview with a local magazine, Yoshida said:
“I clearly see Metaverse as a virtual reality environment aimed at replacing the real world. I don’t think Metaverse has a problem with providing entertainment to users. I see Metaverse as a place where people can shop for groceries or browse shinjiku with avatars to use in virtual reality. I don’t think it provides the entertainment that MMOs offer, and that’s not the point.”
Naoki Yoshida, when asked if he would work on anything related to Metaverse, replied, “I would focus not on the Metaverse environment, but on creating a fun environment in the virtual world.”
