Final Fantasy changed the logo of the new class to be added to the game in response. Final Fantasy 14’s upcoming add-on pack, Endwalker, willalso add a new healer class calledSage. The icon of the class, which will fight with four flying knives called Nouliths, was also designed to symbolize these knives.
However, the logo that Square Enix designed for Sage is said to have triggered a phobia called Tryptophobia in some people. What is tryptophobia can be summarized as follows;
“Tryptophobia is a feeling of extreme fear, anxiety, stress, disgust and discomfort, especially against perforated objects, beings or geometric shapes very similar to each other, such as rectangular, round, convex.” I mean, some kind of geometric phobia.
Final Fantasy revises new class logo amid backlash
Final Fantasy 14 director Naoki Yoshida issueda lengthy statement on the subject. The statement summed up the following statements;
” When we posted new updates for the Sage and Reaper classes on our site, we also included their logos. We didn’t expect them to get a reaction, but we soon started getting messages from players around the world saying that the icon of the Sage class made them uncomfortable or even frightened them.”
Tryptophobia is said to be a more disturbing phobia than previously thought. Suriname Turtles,which carry their offspring in the form of honeycomb-like balls on their backs, can be a good example of the discomfort people feel. However, tryptophobia is not an accepted disorder among medical sciences.
According to an article on a website, Tryptophobiastems from the fear that exists within us against diseases that we can get from insects or decaying body parts.
After all, after a long discussion at a Japanese forum, Final Fantasy changed the logo in response. The new logo shows that gaps have been removed, except for the lowest blade figure. Yoshida said: “I’m not going to let you get
“After all, we haven’t changed the actual design. The four knives representing Sage’s ammo are still in the logo. The gaps in the original design were placed there to detail the logo, but this sequence had serious consequences that we did not expect. Therefore, in the modified icon, we reduced the gaps in the visual, but aimed to preserve the main emphasis of the design.
I’m sure some of you will prefer the old design, but such details are always open to change in the development process. As endwalker approaches, thank you for your understanding of the issue.”
