Gabe Newell said the process of determining the Steam Deck price was painful. According to Newell, the reason the device came out with a $400 price tag is because the price issue is second to none at the design stage. Valve’s lord said in an interview withIGN that the behaviour was a “painful” outcome for the firm.
Newell said the firm’s move would make Valve the chief architect of a larger movement. Therefore, he stated that he planned to take part in the mobile sector of the company by taking extremely “aggressive” steps.
Gabe Newell finds Steam Deck prices affordable
Valve’s hardware director, Shrea Liu, backed Newell’s argument in a separate interview. Liu said pricing of the device was considered a key point at the beginning of the production phase. Shrea Liu stated that “We were aware that the price of the device would be very important, we designed the Steam Deck with this in mind and worked very, very hard to get the device released at this price.”
Newell said many firms think they are kicking opportunities by putting their devices at very high prices in this sector, where they know demand will be extremely high. “We did this pricing with a long-term thinking, which could be a very useful decision for us,” Newell said.
