Microsoft yesterday signed off on one of the biggest acquisitions of all time, tying Activision Blizzard to a total of $68.7 billion. It will probably take 2023 for this deal to be finalized and management to move entirely to Microsoft, but with this acquisition, Microsoft has added a large number of studios and beloved game series.
First of all, let’s remember the studios that will now operate under the Microsoft umbrella: Activision Publishing, Blizzard Entertainment, Beenox, Demonware, Digital Legends, High Moon Studios, Infinity Ward, King, Major League Gaming, Radical Entertainment, Raven Software, Sledgehammer Games, Toys for Bob and Treyarch.
Activision commissioned most of its studios to develop Call of Duty, and even Toys for Bob, the developer of Crash Bandicoot, lost its autonomy and became a studio that helped Call of Duty. Under Microsoft, this process will change drastically, and studios will be able to develop more unique games. Not every game is going to have to be a billion-dollar IP, you see.
Therefore, it is now possible that some series that you will see in the list below and have not been heard for a long time will now return.
Here’s the LIST of IP that will be switching to Microsoft upon completion of the purchase:
- Blur
- Caesar
- Call of Duty
- Candy Crush
- Crash Bandicoot
- Diablo
- DJ Hero
- Empire Earth
- Gabriel Knight
- Geometry Wars
- Guitar Hero
- Gun
- Hearthstone
- Heroes of the Storm
- Hexen
- Interstate ’76
- King’s Quest
- Laura Bow Mysteries
- The Lost Vikings
- Overwatch
- Phantasmagoria
- Pitfall
- Police Quest
- Prototype
- Quest for Glory
- Singularity
- Skylanders
- Soldier of Fortune
- Space Quest
- Spyro the Dragon
- Starcraft
- Tenchu
- TimeShift
- Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater
- True Crime
- World of Warcraft
- Zork
Sierra games on the list immediately caught your attention (King;s Quest, Gabriel Knight, Space Quest, Quest for Glory, etc.). Sierra was acquired by CUC International in 1996, after which the group moved to Vivendi. Vivendi merged with Activision to create Activision Blizzard. Activision revived the Sierra brand in 2014.
So now microsoft has some very solid adventure brands. From now on, it’s on hold.
