Borderlands developer Gearbox is working on nine AAA (large-scale) games at the same time, according to the latest quarterly earnings report from parent company Embracer Group. Emcracer Group recently acquired three studios from Square Enix, along with Tomb Raider, Deus Ex and many more IPs.
The report states: “Gearbox continues to work at breakneck speed to fulfill its ambitious growth mission, and there are nine AAA games currently in development.”
Gearbox has both a development side and a release side. It’s unclear whether all nine games will be developed with Gearbox Software or published by Gearbox Publishing. The report does not mention this detail.
Embracer bought Gearbox in February 2021 for $1.3 billion. The acquisition was made to develop more games for the studio and to grow its publishing business in North America. The Borderlands IP is still owned by Gearbox, and the studio continues to work with publisher 2K Games on the franchise.
On the other hand, Gearbox’s publishing company Blackbird Interactive will release Homeworld 3.
