Philip Summers’s Hand-Drawn Game Guides project, Kickstarter, received a lot of attention, raising $322,000, multiple times exceeding the $20,000 target. Looking at Summers’ guides to Metroid, Contra, Ninja Gaiden and Legend of Zelda, it’s hard not to be amazed, so you can easily understand why you’re getting so much attention.
Summers said he prepared these guides as a child with the goal of reliving the unparalleled excitement of turning a game guide page.
However, Nintendo stepped in at the most unlikely moment and, for legal reasons, led to the project being halted.
“Tonight I’m pulling the plug on the Hand-Drawn Game Guides Kickstarter project. Yes, for exactly what you think. I was hoping I could successfully get away with legal troubles, but unfortunately I couldn’t. Of course I’m disappointed, but I can totally understand why. It’s okay, it’s okay. I’m not angry,” Summers said.
Summers says all orders have been canceled for now, but they’ll know in the coming days if the project is completely dead. It looks like they’re probably going to try to discuss the issue with Nintendo, but Nintendo doesn’t have the structure to back down on these things.
I’d like you to take a look at the Kickstarter page and see how hard Summers has put in this.
