The U.S. Federal Trade Commission has launched an investigation into Sony’s acquisition of Halo and Destiny developer Bungie. Sony announced its acquisition of Bungie earlier this year, just after tech giant and console rival Microsoft bought Activision Blizzard for about $70 billion.
At the time, Sony’s acquisition of Bungie seemed to be in response to Microsoft’s move. Bungie, however, was not on a $3.6 billion company basis. People who spoke to The Information said the FTK’s investigation was not about the size of the acquisition, but rather about monopolization.
Sony said the main reason it acquired Bungie was to help the Destiny developer spread to other media. He confirmed that Bungie has full control over its game development business and will continue to stream games on all platforms.
