James McAvoy, best known for numerous tv shows and films, including the role of Xavier, the young professor in the X-Men films, most recently voiced with Willem Dafoe and Daisy Ridley in the 12 Minutes video game. McAvoy also touched on his acting background and Oblivion addiction in a Forbes interview with12 Minutes.
In 2006, the actor immersed himself in Oblivion so much that he began to have serious problems during filming of Becoming Jane.
“Normally I had to go to bed at 10pm because I was getting up every morning at 6am. I had pages of dialogue and so on to study. But I was playing Oblivion until 4:00 in the morning,” the actor says.
At one point, he even started playing around 8:00 p.m., dropping off at 5:35 p.m., and then driving 10 minutes later to the location of the shooting. At this point, he decided that a solution was needed, removed the game’s disc from the Xbox 360 and put it on the stove and burned it, destroying oblivion.
“I put the disc on the stove and watched it darken and melt a little. And that’s it, we’re done, never again! I was thinking,” McAvoy says. After that, he was away from the games for almost a decade, and then fifa with his son and recently started playing Warzone with his friends.
It’s not unusual to destroy disks to get rid of addiction. Years ago, I did the same thing to a friend of mine who was addicted to Championship Manager, and I broke the game disc. Although he got angry in the first place, he thanked 🙂
