In the past month, Sony has added its Canadian studio Haven, bringing the number of PlayStation Studios to 21. Before that, studios such as Bluepoint Games, which introduced Destiny creator Bungie, Demon;s Souls Remake; and Returnal;developer Housemarque, had come under the Sony umbrella.
SIE president Jim Ryan said they were working to buy more developers.
“We’ve been doing pretty well for playstation studios for the last few years. Their success and commercial success in terms of review scores of their games allows us to make big investments in content creation.
We grow our studios both organically and through acquisitions. We bought five studios in 2021. We are in a productive cycle where success brings success.”
Jim Ryan has previously said sony has no plans to add new games to the new version of PS Plus from day one. In this respect, a system that does not resemble Game Pass; Ryan explained why:
“The games we make are getting bigger, better, more beautiful, richer, the narrative gets stronger… And the players say that’s what they really want from PlayStation. Putting these games on the subscription service on the day they come out disrupts this productive cycle and we can’t make investments like we do now. That’s why we don’t do this. We will continue to take the approach that has worked for us for many years.”
