John Madden, one of american football’s legendary coaches who also worked as an announcer, has died at the age of 85. Madden coached the Oakland Raiders from 1969 to 1978 and won the Super Bowl on January 9, 1977.
Madden joined CBS Sports in 1979 and was known for his broadcasts with CBS, Fox Sports, ABC Sports and NBC Sports.
But we know Madden best from EA Sports’ iconic Madden NFL series. The series, which began with John Madden Football for DOS in 1988, continued for decades, continued its path in 1994 under the name Madden NFL and has sold over 250 million copies to date.
The newest game in the series was Madden’s 32nd game of the NFL 22 major series. EA will probably continue to use the madden name from now on and keep the memory of the legendary coach warm.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement that “another John Madden will not come, and we will forever be indebted to him for what he has done to move American football and the NFL to its present place.”
