These 10 teams will be divided into two groups of five by the draw and will compete to become one of the four teams that will advance to the group stage. Each team will face all the other teams in the group once. The first-place teams from both groups will automatically advance to the group stage. The teams in third and fourth place will face each other in the five-game series, with the winning teams facing the other group runners-up for the last two places in the group stage. Two teams from VCS will not be able to participate in the tournament.
There will be a total of 16 teams with 12 new additions to the four teams that have qualified in the group stage:
Top three teams in LCK (Korea) (DWG KIA, Gen.G, T1), LPL (China) (FunPlus Phoenix, EDward Gaming, Royal Never Give Up) and LEC (Europe) (MAD Lions, Fnatic, Rogue)
Top two teams in the LCS (North American) rankings (100 Thieves, Team Liquid)
First team in PCS (Southeast Asia) rankings (PSG. Talon Esports)
These 16 teams will be divided into four groups of four and will meet twice with all other teams in each team group. The top two teams in each group will advance to the qualifying stage.
During the qualifying phase, the remaining eight teams in the tournament will face each other in single elimination groups, where they will play a five-match series, and the quarterfinals, semifinals and final will continue. The two finalists will play a five-game series, with the winner becoming the 2021 League of Legends World Champion.
