Riot and Orbit Books have announced the first novel set in the League of Legends universe. The novel Ruination is written by Anthony Reynolds, the lead author of Riot Games, and is expected to be available in September.
Ruination is a novel that focuses on the champions of “Kalista, The Spear of Revenge” and “Viego, The Ruined King”.
Kalista was added to the game in 2014 , and the character description reads: Kalista, an entity full of revenge ambition and anger, is an immortal, vengeful soul who comes out of the Shadow Islands to hunt down traitors and cheaters when called upon. Woe to those who have descended upon its wrath. They’d better say their last prayers now, because the deals with this ruthless hunter will only end with the soul-destroying, cold flame-adorned spears getting stuck in his target.
Viego, on the other hand, is one of the new champions, and even this year we saw him in the lead role in the side game Ruined King: Viego was once the king of a country that had already been forgotten. More than a thousand years ago, as he tried to revive his dead wife, he triggered a magical catastrophe known as Disaster that brought its own end. Viego, who became a powerful snorer who suffered from his obsessive longing for his queen who died centuries ago, is now the Ruined King. He controls the deadly Harrowings, one day he turns on Runeterra to find something that can cure isolde; and destroys everything that comes his way as the Black Mist spreads from his cruel, broken heart.
In Ruination, the relationship between these two characters will be at the forefront, as Kalista seeks a land of legends to achieve ancient spells, the only way to save King Viego;the military-resustered and poisoned Queen Isolde.
League of Legends has met the literary scene before, and in 2020 the short novel Garen: First Shield was published exclusively in e-book format. The short novel is different from the novels we know, of course, it tells a short story. Since there is a significant difference between “novella” and “novel”, we can call Ruination the first novel.
